2017 - Travelling in Japan

2017/08 - Japan - Kyoto University Clock Tower, where I spent an afternoon sipping coffee thinking back to the days when I had enjoyed life there as a foreign student. The university has changed considerably since then - the clock tower has not...and so I painted it in vivid colors... /// Materials: FABER-CASTELL PITT Artist pens (black), Schmincke watercolors, Faber-Castell Watercolour Pencils Albrecht Duerer and Mitsubishi POSCA UNI for densening the colors, White Gouache (for the same purpose); Paper: HAHNEMUEHLE sketch book A4 (portrait), 120 g/m2 - heavily worked through...the paper started to dissolve - but it did not tear - lucky me, sketch time appr. 1.5 hrs;

2017/08 - Japan - Kyushu - Usa-City; Usa-City displays two Zero fighter aircraft from WW II - one is real another is a mock up for a Japanese movie, playing in that area. Usa-City had a long tarmac for "Kamikaze"-take offs during the past days of WW II - a pretty sad part of history. However, I decided to paint the aircraft (without the museum has been placed into) - just to be able to play with the colors... /// Materials: FABER-CASTELL PITT Artist pens (black), Schmincke watercolors, Faber-Castell Watercolour Pencils Albrecht Duerer and Mitsubishi POSCA UNI for densening the colors; Paper: HAHNEMUEHLE sketch book A4 (portrait), 120 g/m2, sketch time appr. 2 hrs;

2017/08 - Japan - Okinawa; Naha-City -  "SHURI-jo" (castle); Here is one of the most famous castles in Japan. Unfortunately it had been burned down during an air raid in WW II, since it had been a command base of the Japanese Military in that area - but after WW II it was rebuilt perfectly. The drawing shows stamps from a "stamp rallye" together with a mystical lion statue and a view from the castle over Naha-City to the sea ... /// Materials: FABER-CASTELL PITT Artist pens (black), Schmincke watercolors; Paper: HAHNEMUEHLE sketch book A4 (portrait), 120 g/m2, sketch time appr. 45 min;

2017/08 - Japan - Kyushu and Tokyo; The German locomotive had been in operation early in the 19th century and found it's final station at "Usa-Jingu" (Usa-shrine) in Kyushu, southern Japan...where it still contrasts with the surrounding traditional Usa-Shrine buildings. I had time in the morning, thought about sketching the shrine - but liked the sun's reflections on the black iron of the locomotive...and so it became the locomotive rather than the shrine. I'll sketch that next time... The other drawing is from the Tokyo train we took between the two Tokyo airports - we were really tired... /// Materials: FABER-CASTELL PITT Artist pens (black), Schmincke watercolors, Faber-Castell Watercolour Pencils Albrecht Duerer and a yellow and red Mitsubishi POSCA UNI for densening the colors; Paper: HAHNEMUEHLE sketch book A4 (portrait), 120 g/m2, sketch time appr. 2 hrs for the train, 20 min for our tired passenger;

2016/10 - Bahnpark Augsburg - Steam Locomotive Series 03 - Built 1937

2016/10 - Augsburg, Urban Sketchers Augsburg Treffen - Bahnpark Augsburg. Hier habe ich versucht eine Dampflokomotive der Serie 03 ('2C1'h2) zu skizzieren. Der Bahnpark in Augsburg ist sehr beeindruckend und bietet jeder Menge toller Lokomotiven ein Dach über dem Kopf. Die 03 wurde in Deutschland ca. 300 mal gebaut. Diese 03 stammt von der Firma BORSIG (Berlin) und hatte ihre erste Fahrt 1937. Vor dem Zeichnen habe ich mich ein wenig in Dampfloks und deren 1918 vom Deutschen Lokomotiven Normenausschuß (LON) als Norm 52 ins Leben gerufene Nomenklatur eingelesen. Das möchte ich kurz mit Euch teilen: '2C1'h2 steht für [ '2 ] = 2 bewegliche Laufachsen vorne; [ C ] = 3 gekuppelte Achsen, auf die die Kraft übertragen wird; [ 1' ] = 1 bewegliche Laufachse hinten; [ h ] = Heißdampf (im Gegensatz zu dem etwas weniger effektiven n=Naßdampf); [ 2 ] = 2 Zylinder für die Krafterzeugung... genug Theorie // EN: Augsburg, Urban Sketchers Augsburg meeting - railway park Augsburg. Here I tried to sketch a steam locomotive of the series 03 ( '2C1'h2 ). The railway park in Augsburg is very impressive and offers a lot of great locomotives a cosy place to spend their retirement. The 03 was built in Germany about 300 times by BORSIG (Berlin) and had its first journey 1937. Before the drawing I read a little into steam locomotives and their nomenclature, laid down in 1918 by the German locomotive norms committee (LON) as standard 52. I would like to briefly share this with you: '2C1'h2 stands for [ ' 2 ] = 2 flexible wheels in front; [ C ] = 3 coupled axis to which the force is transmitted; [1 '] = 1 flexible rear axis; [ H ] = hot steam (as opposed to the somewhat less effective n = wet steam); [ 2 ] = 2 cylinders for power generation ... enough theory /// Materials: CARAN D'ACHE NEOCOLOR II water soluble pastels; LAMY fountain pen fine with black ink; MITSUBISHI uni-ball POSCA color markers 0.7mm, Paper: 24 x 32 cm2 Boesner Aktstudienblock, 80 g/m2 (this is a slightly yellow, very water resistant paper), sketch time appr. 2.5 hrs;

2016/08 - MVG - Wartung einer U-Bahn - Subway Maintenance

2016/08 - Münchner VerkehrsGesellschaft (MVG) - Technische Basis - Werkstatt - Auch U-Bahnen müssen manchmal gewartet werden. Dieser Wagen mit entkoppeltem Fahrgestell hatte es mir angetan - ein passender Titel wäre sicherlich "Keine Bange - Alles wird wieder gut !!" Vielen Dank nochmals an die MVG, daß Sie uns Urban Sketchern heute diesen Besuch erlaubt haben. Wir kommen gerne wieder - ein toller Platz zum Malen; // EN: Munich Transport Company ( MVG ) - Technical Basis - Workshop - As other means of transport subways must be maintenanced at times. This car with detached chassis was a definite eye catcher - a title probably fitting to this picture would be " Don't worry - everything will be all right !! " Thanks again to the MVG having allowed us Urban Sketchers this visit to your premises today. We'd be happy getting another chance to paint at the workshop; // Materials: SCHMINCKE HORADAM watercolors, uni-ball eye micro black, FABER CASTELL PITT "B" thick black pen, Mitsubishi uni POSCA water based liners (yellow, blue, red, white) 0.7mm for the lines; paper Hahnemuehle A4, 200g/m2; appr. 120min;

2016/07 - Eisenbahnbrücke bei München - Train Bridge close to Munich

2016/07 - Leinthaler Eisenbahnbrücke nördlich von München. Mich haben hier die periodisch über die Brücke donnernden Frachtzüge, die weißen Stromschnellen der Isar und die quer über das Bild führende Oberleitung fasziniert. Die habe ich dann mit einer Zahnbürste und Deckweiß noch in ihrem Eindruck verstärkt... ein toller Platz zum Malen; // EN: Railway bridge "Leinthal" north of Munich. Especially the periodically rolling freight trains, the white rapids of Isar river and the catenary were fascinating so that even enhanced them with a toothbrush and opaque white in their impression ... a great place for painting; // Materials: SCHMINCKE HORADAM watercolors, uni-ball eye micro black, FABER CASTELL PITT thick black pen, DERWENT line Painters 0.5mm, DERWENT color pencils for the lines, appr. 90min;
